Reviving Light After DisasterFollowing devastating typhoons that left vast areas of Cebu without reliable electricity, KASN partnered with the Cebu Provincial Government to address critical infrastructure gaps. The installation of 792 solar streetlights has transformed once-dark roads, marketplaces, and evacuation centers into well-lit hubs of activity, ensuring safety for over 50,000 residents while supporting long-term recovery efforts.
Governor Maria Santos emphasized, “KASN’s solar lights are more than infrastructure—they symbolize resilience. After the storms, our communities needed sustainable solutions, not temporary fixes. These lights are a beacon of progress and safety.”
Designed to withstand extreme weather, each solar streetlight features:
KASN prioritized typhoon-prone zones, including coastal barangays and landslide-affected upland communities, ensuring vulnerable populations regained access to secure pathways and public spaces.
“Before KASN’s lights, we feared walking home after dark. Now, children study under streetlights, and vendors work safely into the night,” shared Rosa Delgado, a resident of Argao municipality.
The project, completed in 5 months, involved:
KASN Project Manager, Dr. Luis Gomez, stated, “Our goal was to deliver not just light, but lasting empowerment. Solar energy is key to building climate-smart communities.”
Buoyed by the project’s success, KASN and Cebu officials plan to expand solar lighting to 300 additional villages by 2025. The initiative serves as a model for disaster recovery across Southeast Asia, blending innovation with community-driven development.
